It is said in the jargon of Latin sailing that until you go through the masts nothing is decided, and that is what can be applied to the thirty-second edition of the Canary Islands Barquillos de Vela Latina Championship – Líneas Romero. The last day began with a prominent Romerito Líneas Romero, but the boat skippered by David Martín suffered a jibe in the first race of the day. The Playa Blanca skippered by Virginia Morales won the second race and for the first time in history, a woman inscribes her name as champion of the Canary Islands Barquillos de Vela Latina Championship.
The wind forecasts on the island of La Graciosa were fulfilled on Sunday morning, decreasing the intensity of the wind compared to the first two days and blowing with an intensity of 6 to 8 knots. In the first race of the day there had to be several starts, due to a general offside and a change in the direction of the wind.
The changes in the leading positions were frequent throughout the entire course, and the Romerito Líneas Romero closely marked its main rivals. It seemed that the boat skippered by David Martín was deciding the Canary Islands Championship, but it suffered a jibe in the downwind towards the finish line. The Isidoro y Manuela – Di Napoli of José Pascual Perdomo scored the victory and entered fully into the fight for the title.
More emotion could not be asked of the sixth and final race of the regional competition, with up to four boats that maintained their chances of being champions. The Isidoro y Manuela – Di Napoli took the lead of the fleet, and the Romerito Líneas Romero was losing positions in the first windward leg to the race course.
Without making too much noise, the Playa Blanca entered directly into the fight for the victory and placed itself as leader in the downwind and crossed the finish line of the last race as the winner. The boat skippered by Virginia Morales had to wait for the entry of the rest of the rivals, putting three boats ahead of the Isidoro y Manuela Di Napoli and eight ahead of the Romerito Líneas Romero.
The Playa Blanca rose to the title of champion of the Canary Islands Barquillos de Vela Latina Championship – Líneas Romero, and Virginia Morales becomes the first woman to be the skipper of a champion boat in the archipelago. A historic event for being held for the first time on the island of La Graciosa and for being the first to be won by a woman.
The Isidoro y Manuela – Di Napoli revalidates the title of runner-up achieved in the last edition and takes second place, and the Romerito Líneas Romero completes the podium with the third position. Tritón Clínica Veterinaria Bari and Fayna Salinas de Janubio complete the first five places, being fourth and fifth, respectively.
