Puerto Calero
The Frenchman Pierre Antoine Morvan has been proclaimed champion of the IV Puerto Calero Match Race Trophy that has been held this week in waters of Lanzarote (Canary Islands). In the grand final, Morvan and José María Ponce from Gran Canaria faced each other, with victory for the Frenchman by 3-0. The third place went to the Slovenian Jure Orel.
In the semifinals, Morvan and the Slovenian Jude Orel faced each other with a 3-1 in favor of the Frenchman. In the other, José María Ponce was able to beat the Russian Andrew Arbuzov with a 3-0.
In the final, Morvan was implacable, achieving two penalties for Ponce in the first pre-start, which gave him a considerable advantage from the start.
In the second match of the final, Ponce managed to get ahead with a great advantage over the great favorite, reaching the windward buoy with several lengths of advantage, but at the beginning of the last stern he got the furler of the jib caught and lost all his advantage. The Frenchman pounced on him and caused him three penalties, so the referees showed Ponce a black flag on this occasion, with which Morvan scored 2-0.
The third confrontation -which was the best of five- would end up being the last. Morvan took the lead and dedicated himself to marking Ponce, achieving the decisive point and winning the Puerto Calero Match Race Trophy.
José María Ponce, who won the 2007 edition of the Puerto Calero Match Race Trophy, commented after finishing the race that "he would have signed before starting to finish second. The level has been very high and for me it is a great result".
In the match for third and fourth place, the Slovenian Jure Orel won 2-1 against the Russian Andrew Arbuzov, who after winning the first match, was surpassed twice by the Slovenian.
