This first edition of the tournament will be held from September 20 to 24 on the courts of the San Bartolomé sports center and the courts of the Ajei Bowling Club. The cup will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., from Tuesday to Saturday.
The presentation ceremony took place at the San Bartolomé Senior Center and was attended by the president of the Island Council, María Dolores Corujo, the Minister of Sports, Alfredo Mendoza, the mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, and the president of the Nazaret Bowling Club, Manuel García.
“With this championship we not only spread a Canarian tradition, but we also promote values such as relationship, friendship, tolerance, respect or teamwork, and I am sure it will be a success”, said the president, María Dolores Corujo.
“We have left the health crisis behind and, finally, life returns to normal, especially for the elderly, who have been the most affected by the pandemic. The First Island Cup of Canarian Wood Ball comes to mean the reunion of teams of men and women over 60 years of age with this Canarian game that we carry so deep inside”, said the president.
Visibility to a traditional sport
For his part, the Minister of Sports, Alfredo Mendoza, expressed the satisfaction that the Cabildo is giving visibility to a sport "as traditional and beloved as this one", and assured that “everything is prepared so that the elderly have their space in island sports and enjoy four days of competition and fun”.
Finally, the mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, expressed his gratitude to the Cabildo for organizing the event in the municipality, “hosting a new championship full of hope and that represents a great opportunity to promote physical activity among the elderly of the municipality and the island”.
Each municipality will be represented by four male teams and four female teams. As a requirement for registration, these teams must have participated in the latest editions of the Torneo de Abuelos Conejeros.
The winners of the first four places, both in the men's and women's categories, will receive a trophy.
