The TeidELA Association will organize an event next Thursday, October 12, which aims to make those affected by the disease in the Canary Islands visible. The Basque long-distance swimmer and president of the Siempre AdELAnte association, Jaime Caballero, will return to the Islands to complete a swimming challenge that will unite Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
The main purpose of the event is to "give voice" to people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) through this information and awareness campaign, which is part of the 'Sewing ALS in the Canary Islands' project, in which the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands participates.
On this occasion, the athlete Jaime Caballero, who began to get involved with this cause in 2008, will be accompanied by a support team that will follow him by boat. The departure will be in Fuerteventura, at 09.30 hours and, it is expected to arrive in Lanzarote around 13.30 hours. There, Caballero will be received by the authorities and the public who attend to support the swimmer.
In this regard, the Management coordinator of TeidELA, Carolina Fernández, states that "these proposals are necessary to give voice not only to those affected, but also to the family members who accompany and remain with the patients during the disease process."
This information campaign on ALS is part of a project launched by the TeidELA Association, which is subsidized by the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands. This association aims to seek improvements in all areas involved in the care of people affected by this disease in the archipelago: research, regulatory, social and health.
Likewise, TeidELA is carrying out other activities in the autonomous region, such as carrying out a simplified study of the reality of ALS in the Canary Islands, as well as informative meetings to promote knowledge and visibility of ALS. In turn, during the month of November, they will hold dissemination days in Gran Canaria.
