Puerto del Carmen Defeats Zonzamas in a High-Contact Derby (27-24)

The Tiñoseras always took the initiative on the scoreboard against a Batatero team that never gave up.

Puerto del Carmen defeated Zonzamas in a derby with a lot of contact (27-24)

A vibrant derby was expected between Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen and Lanzarote Zonzamas, and it was. From the beginning, it was clear that the match would have a lot of contact, which is why Miguel Ángel Lemes' team suffered the first exclusion after 45 seconds, but despite this, the Tiñoseras were able to take the lead on the scoreboard practically from the start.

The strong defense of the yellow team was a constant wall for the Batateras, who were surprised in the first minutes by the local counterattacks, which served to widen the differences on the scoreboard.

The boisterous public from San Bartolomé, dressed in red and black shirts and accompanied by the sound of the drums that usually make the Las Palmeras Pavilion tremble, did not cease in their efforts to encourage their team, often above the encouragement of the local fans. However, Puerto del Carmen was in control on the court, even with some numerical disadvantage, which allowed them to go to halftime with a score of 16 to 12.

In the second half, Puerto del Carmen used a personal defense, player by player, which allowed them to widen the differences on the scoreboard from the beginning, a situation that was again returned by the visiting team thanks to some good definitions by Cristina Mazaira in the goal, who returned to what was her home for several seasons, and the respective definitions of the Argentine international Mariángeles de Uriarte.

The difference of up to four goals advantage was maintained for the locals, who knew how to play with one less player, sacrificing their goalkeeper in attack and maintaining possession of the ball as much as necessary so that the Batatero team would not cause them danger. However, that difference gradually increased, reaching 6 goals in the quarter of an hour of the second half.

CB Lanzarote Zonzamas did not want to add their second defeat, and the locals did not want to miss the addition of two points to their tally, so they did not trust the Batatero's push and continued to defend the scoreboard, even if it led them to suffer some exclusions that, this time well carried out by Juanmi Pérez's team, served to reduce the difference to 3. It was time to stop the match, and Miguel Ángel Lemes knew it. Therefore, with just over 7 minutes left and with a 3-point advantage, 23 to 20, he called a timeout to ask his players to keep their heads.

With just over 5 minutes left, Puerto del Carmen suffered the disqualification of Keyla Hernández, which gave wings to the visitors. However, the good performances of Madeleine Cortez, who was solid in the most important moments for Puerto del Carmen, motivated her teammates not to give up and even widen the differences.

But a derby is a derby, and anything can happen. The public encouraged their teams, and the players fought in a sporting battle. With 3 minutes left, the score of 26 to 22 left everything open. However, and despite the attempts of both teams to score, the final score was 27 to 24, with Puerto del Carmen adding a new victory and Zonzamas the second consecutive defeat of the season.
