More than 500 athletes confirmed for the third edition of the Yaiza Extremo Sur

The trail and MTB event is held on Sunday, May 14 amidst spectacular landscapes in the south of the island

Third edition of the Yaiza Extremo Sur championship

Yaiza Extremo Sur returns this weekend to bring together, for another year, the trail (8, 16 and 27 km) and mountain bike (35 and 58 km) modalities with the participation of children's categories, which compete next Saturday, May 13, announces the City Council.

The absolute categories will do so on Sunday the 14th, the ideal combination of sport and landscape in a competition that has not stopped gaining followers, so much so that more than 500 athletes are registered for this third edition, adding both modalities, they report. In addition, the Canary Islands Mountaineering Federation (FECAMON) has included it in the Canary Islands Mountain Racing Cup, so the southern municipality will bring together the highest regional sports level with the presence of athletes from all the Canary Islands.

Óscar Noda, Ángel Lago, Moisés Saavedra, technical director of the event, and local athletes Albi Cedrés and Jorge Torres presented the III Yaiza Extremo Sur this Tuesday at the MYND hotel in Playa Blanca, one of the collaborating firms, it is reported.

Noda stressed "the consolidation of the event with greater participation not only from Canary Islands athletes, but also from different regions of Spain who are seduced by competing surrounded by the spectacular nature of our landscape and the good climate."

For his part, Ángel Lago pointed out that "it is an event that we have a special affection for because it started in the pandemic, being the first sporting event in Lanzarote that opened the way for all those athletes who were eager to resume activity."

"The data for this year is overwhelming in terms of participation"

Regarding the number of competitors, Moi Saavedra has confirmed that "the data for this year is overwhelming in terms of participation with exponential growth, largely due to the increase in requests from the athletes themselves who are looking for that score in the Canary Islands Mountain Cup, but also to seeing in the southern landscape the opportunity to test themselves and improve as athletes."

In addition, the Lanzarote runner, Albi Cedrés, acknowledges that "I will always be grateful to the City Council because they have treated the sport very well and are taking care of the youth academy." The Uga runner warns of the hardness that a test can have "with a very fast, deceptive circuit that can punish the legs a lot."

Regarding the MTB modality, Jorge Torres has highlighted "the difficulty of a competition that makes it a complete test in every way." "You have to take it easy, with special attention to the force of the wind that seems to be there," he points out. But the truth is that "I really like the route because it is quite complete, with good climbs and very fast descents, flat areas, technical trails, in short, it encompasses everything that MTB is," he makes clear.

"We will put all the love and all the will with the whole team, so it will be a sports festival with the best professionals behind in the organizational structure," added the mayor.
