The Domingo Alonso facilities in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria hosted a press conference this Wednesday by the Volkswagen importer, in which Yeray Lemes and Rogelio Peñate participated, who assessed their participation in the Rally de Cataluña. In addition, they were accompanied by the general director of Domingo Alonso, Oliver Alonso, the manager of Volkswagen Canarias, Magüi Melián, and the official driver of the Group, Toñi Ponce.
Magüi Melián began by thanking the media for the impact that the Canarian team's participation in the Rally de Cataluña has had. "It is very important for us, we are working hard and with great enthusiasm, because from the first moment that the participation of Yeray and Rogelio was confirmed, the first thing that Volkswagen Motorsport told us was, now, it is your turn to take advantage of the opportunity. There is still no confirmation of whether they will continue in the team, although they were very happy with the results both on gravel and asphalt and the satisfaction was general," he said.
"In the end, the technicians asked us, are you happy with the driver you wanted? At all times, they have expressed being very satisfied, but it is not easy, we continue working. They have done their job, they have complied with what was asked of them, we already knew them in the Canary Islands, but the important thing was to show it to the whole world, and they have really demonstrated what they are capable of. But, even so, it is not easy to get there, there is a very large list of people who aspire to the same thing. Just today I insisted again to see if I could communicate something to them at this press conference, and the answer was that no official assessments will be made until after the Rally of England. There are still drivers being assessed and it is logical that they cannot reveal anything," he indicated.
The manager of Volkswagen Canarias continued by pointing out that "it was not easy for Yeray and Rogelio to be at the Rally de Cataluña either." "We as importers are going to do everything in our power to continue working with Yeray and Rogelio and get them to be part of any Volkswagen Motorsport project. We have to work hard with the language and continue racing, which is what it is all about in the end. If we cannot be within the official team with the Volkswagen Polos, we will work to ensure that they remain within the Volkswagen project," he indicated.
He also spoke about the possibility of races being held in the Archipelago. "There is interest from Volkswagen Motorsport in holding a test in the Canary Islands, specifically in Fuerteventura, we are in contact and there is a clear intention, but it is only a project. We are preparing a very detailed dossier of the gravel tracks in Fuerteventura, as well as the possibility of making asphalt sections in Gran Canaria. There is a clear intention on the part of Volkswagen to do something. This week we will pass the report to Germany and we are going to get tests carried out in the Islands," he highlighted.
