Last weekend, the Canary Islands U15 and U17 Badminton Championship was held in the Pavilion of the University Campus of Tafira, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with the presence of twelve players from the Lanzarote Raqueta Club representing the island. The Lanzarote expedition returned from that trip with one silver and seven bronze medals, being very satisfied with the work done and with the metals obtained in the regional event.
The Sub15 women's pair formed by Gabriela Muggler and Martina Negrín was in charge of climbing to the second step of the podium, after losing to Sulimar Cabrera and Irene Martín
in the final by 21-5 and 21-11.
Lanzarote badminton was on the verge of the final of the individual Sub17 male and Sub15 female categories, as well as in the Sub15 male doubles, Sub17 male doubles and Sub17 mixed doubles, where they finally hung the bronze medal around their necks.
Adrián Carabali, after successfully completing the group stage in Sub17 male, defeated Juan José Espinosa to advance to the semifinals, where he ended up being defeated by Dayron Gutiérrez by 18-21 and 10-21. For her part, Martina Negrín dominated her Sub15 female group and defeated Aira Santana and Gabriela Sánchez, before falling in the semifinals against Sulimar Cabrera by 21-5 and 21-7.
Regarding the participation of doubles, the pair formed by Goran Neyen González and Ryan Max Torreblanca in Sub15 male doubles won one of the three matches played in
the category, as a league, and finished third. A similar case was that of Sebastián Bisaro and Adrián Carabali in Sub17 male doubles, who after winning 2 of the 4 matches of the league occupied the third drawer.
For their part, Daniel Rodríguez and Amaya Catharina Betancor, who formed a Sub17 mixed pair, were removed from the competition in the semifinals by the pair formed by Enrique Socorro and Eliana de Saa by 21-17 and 21-15, adding a new bronze for the Lanzarote expedition.
The Canary Islands Badminton Championship also included a team competition in which Lanzarote won two bronze medals. In the Sub15 category, Lanzarote won in the quarterfinals against Gran Canaria (5-0), falling in the semifinals against Tenerife (1-4).
In the fight for the medals, the Lanzarote team won the bronze by defeating La Palma (3-2). And in the Sub17 category, Lanzarote won against La Gomera (3-2), lost in the semifinals against Fuerteventura (2-3) and won the bronze by defeating La Palma (5-0).
This weekend the Lanzarote club rests in terms of competition, but not in terms of activities, being immersed in the National Monitor Course that will be held in Arrecife.
