Lanzarote's motorsport demands the creation of the Island Federation: "We demand a change"

The president of Marmape Motorsport assures that both athletes, clubs and public institutions of the island are "hand in hand" in defending the rights of local sport

Petition from the Island Federation of Lanzarote

The celebration of the Tomás Viera rallysprint last weekend staged, once again, a historical demand of Lanzarote's motorsport: the creation of an Island Federation.

Currently, the island's sports events depend directly on the Las Palmas Automobile Federation or, if applicable, on the Canary Islands Automobile Federation. "We are demanding something that exists in other sports, an Island Federation or, if that is not possible, a Delegation," explains the president of Marmape Motorsport, Marcial Álvarez.

However, Álvarez himself acknowledges that the creation is "not easy." "First, the statutes of the Canary Islands Federation would have to be changed, which are not updated based on the Sports Law of 2019," explains the president of the club, who adds that once that is achieved, the proposal would have to be presented to the federation and put to a vote.

"We would need a third of the votes in favor to be able to carry out the proposal," says Marcial Álvarez, who emphasizes that the Lanzarote motorsport association demands "a change," which only involves the creation of the Federation, and if that is not possible, a delegation.

"If you go to any sport, you see that it is represented in Lanzarote by an Island Delegation," points out Álvarez, who even claims that the Sports Law of 2019 "establishes that the creation of that delegation is mandatory." In addition, he assures that the claim of that Federation is only so that the island's clubs "can carry out the Lanzarote events."

In addition, Marcial Álvarez assures that the petition for the Island Automobile Federation is promoted by the Cabildo of Lanzarote, led by the president, María Dolores Corujo, and by the Minister of Sports, Alfredo Mendoza. "We are all hand in hand," he asserts.

Finally, Marcial Álvarez explains that the next movement of Lanzarote's motorsport, towards that possible Island Federation, will be in the elections to the FALP and the Canary Islands Federation, at the end of the year. "We are going to try to have representatives from Lanzarote who fight for the sport and for the work, I myself will also present myself," he concludes.
