Everything is ready in Puerto Calero to host one of the most important events of the sailing season. From this Friday to next Sunday, the Spanish J80 Championship will be held in the waters of Puerto Calero. The main crews of this class will meet in Lanzarote, and the Canary Islanders are the big favorites.

Among the participants, the presence of the current Spanish champion, Gustavo Martínez Doreste, stands out. Aboard the JJ Palmensis-Islas Canarias, he will try to revalidate the championship title won last year in Santander. Also in the waters of Puerto Calero will be the 2007 world champion, José María Torcida, at the helm of ECC Viviendas.

Gustavo Martínez Doreste commented that "it will be a very competitive championship because the quality of the Lanzarote fleet is very high and high-level crews from outside will join it". "Defending the title is a pride for me, here the conditions will be different and so will the rivals," explained the current national champion.

For his part, José María Torcida commented that his crew is coming to Lanzarote "with the intention of continuing the preparation for the Santander World Championship, with the aim of consolidating the crew." The performance of José María Torcida is a complete unknown, as he suffered a knee injury a few months ago.

The Canary Island fleet and especially the Lanzarote sailors will try to demonstrate their potential in the J80 class and their participation will be very prominent. Among the participants, the Museo de los Cetáceos de Canarias, skippered by Alfredo Morales, the Hotel Princesa Yaiza of Rayco Tabares and the Fandango of Nano Negrín stand out

The participation of about 30 boats is expected. The organization has planned the celebration of 8 regattas throughout the weekend, with the first races being held on the afternoon of this Friday.
