Cartagena.- The Islas Canarias Puerto Calero, owned by José Antonio
Calero and skippered by José María Ponce, was proclaimed today winner of the [Audi MedCup Circuit->http://2009.medcup.org/home/?lang=ES] in the GP 42' class and, in parallel, of the Región de Murcia Trophy, the last event of the circuit and the penultimate of the season, pending the celebration of the GP 42' Global Cup, which will be held from October 13 to 17 in Puerto Calero.
The Islas Canarias Puerto Calero arrived at the last day of the circuit with
a two-point disadvantage over Paolo Cian's Roma and needed to
recover these points in the three races scheduled for today, but the instability of the wind has meant that only one could be held and almost at the limit of time.
After Islas Canarias Puerto Calero came Iberdrola, Caser Endesa in third place and Roma in fourth. Behind them came José María van der Ploeg's Madrid and Roberto Monti's Airis.
The test was not easy as the south wind between 8 and 10 knots was
very shifty, and even the Race Committee ordered two changes of course, the second pass through the windward mark and the finish line. The Canary boat managed to maintain the first position at all times, except in the first pass through the windward mark, which was for Iberdrola. From that moment on, it dominated the situation and with Wizner's boat always on its heels, it forced the Roman boat to go to the other side of the race course, which meant that in the end Caser Endesa also entered ahead of the Italians.
In the end, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero won the Región de Murcia Trophy with a one-point advantage over Iberdrola and Roma, second and third
respectively. As for the Audi MedCup Circuit, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero won by one point over Roma and twenty-five over the third, Caser Endesa.
The next event for the Islas Canarias Puerto Calero Racing Team will be the
RC 44 Portoroz Cup, which will be held from September 29 to October 2 in Slovenian waters.
