Last Saturday, the Amura Restaurant - Grupo Fariones Trophy was held in the waters of Puerto Calero with the celebration of two regattas, which were held on a windward-leeward course. A total of 31 boats met at the starting line. The afternoon presented light wind of 10, 12 knots, southeast direction, which was decreasing as the clock ticked.
In the first one, Gustavo Martínez Doreste with "JJ Palmensis" dominated, with Aureliano Negrín San Ginés with "El Fandango" always in his wake, the man from Gran Canaria sealing the deal in the 2nd downwind leg. In the end, the top three would be completed with Augusto Escolar from Tenerife, followed by the locals Rayco Tabares and Carlos Morales.
The second race of the day was more complicated as the wind intensity dropped to 5 knots, reaching 10 and even 11 knots, the direction remained as in the first one in SE. Some boats decided to retire due to the lack of wind.
Again it was Gustavo Martínez who commanded the fleet without seeing the lead in danger. The crews that went offshore were right to take advantage of the gusts of fresh wind that allowed them to gain an advantage over the rest, while those who decided to sail close to land were relegated.
A calm reached the fleet at the leeward buoy, causing experience to play an important role in the fight to mount the buoy.
In the end it would be Gustavo Martínez with "JJ Palmensis" who certified his second victory of the day, while Augusto Escolar, skippering "Gordita", managed to sneak in as 2nd, which would allow him to close in that position in the overall standings. Pedro Ferrer at the helm of "Ferrer Casualwear", would be the first local sailor to cross the finish line taking 3rd place, 4th was "Tangaroa" of Benn Atkinson, being 5th Rayco Tabares with "Hotel Princesa Yaiza".
After the regattas on Saturday, the overall standings, which would ultimately be definitive, were headed by Gustavo Martínez Doreste, followed by Augusto Escolar, 3rd was Rayco Tabares, 4th place went to Pedro Ferrer, while 5th was Ikos of Carlos Morales.
On Sunday, the crews waited for the wind to make its appearance on the race course, but the lack of intensity and the continuous shifts forced the cancellation of the two scheduled races.
Luis Jordán, head of the Regatta Committee, decided after two o'clock in the afternoon to suspend the races due to the instability of the wind.
Gustavo Martínez from Gran Canaria, who won the two races held, repeats victory for the second time this season.
The trophies were presented in "Las Carpas de Puerto Calero", with Alexia of Greece and her husband, Carlos Morales, president of the J80 Fleet; Milagros Prats, representing the Amura Restaurant; Bienvenido Saavedra, general manager of the Fariones Group; and Javier Hidalgo representing the crews, in charge of awarding the winners.
Now the crews will enjoy more than a month to continue with their set-up for the next trophy to be held on April 30.
