The Tenerife town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna hosted a new edition of the San Silvestre Lagunera. A competition that is held on the afternoon of the last day of the year and in which the main streets of the city of Aguere are covered. A test that included the participation of the Lanzarote native Francisco José García Viñoly and who would win the victory at the finish line.
The Lanzarote long-distance runner Francisco José García Viñoly, a member of the Santa Cruz CajaCanarias club, traveled to the island of Tenerife to participate in the twenty-eighth edition of the San Silvestre Lagunera. A test that included the participation of 1,600 athletes, to which must be added a good number of people who ran without a bib number when registration closed.
Francisco José García Viñoly had a very competitive race and maintained a hand-to-hand battle with Juan José Cruz Pérez and Juan Ramón Muñoz López. The race would be decided on the final straight and the Lanzarote athlete crossed the finish line in first place. Francisco José García Viñoly stopped the clock with a time of 17 minutes and 57 seconds, one second ahead of José Juan Cruz Pérez and three ahead of Juan Ramón Muñoz López. In the women's category, the victory went to Teresa Linares from Tenerife.
After the athletes who finished the course crossed the finish line, the awards and distinctions were presented to the overall winners. The event was presided over by the mayor of La Laguna, Fernando Clavijo, accompanied by Milagros Luis Brito, Minister of Education, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands. The councilor also participated during the race.
