Puerto del Carmen vs. Cleba (7)

Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen achieved their first victory of the season this Saturday at the Tías Municipal Hall with a visit from Caja Rural Cleba (28-22) in a match corresponding to the second day of the Women's División de Honor Oro.

Home debut with a victory for the women from Tinajo in a match that they dominated during the first few stages (6-4, min. 10). The women from León began to pick up steam and tied the score around the midpoint of the first half. Shortly after, Cleba took the lead for the first time, prompting the first time-out from Jesús Casanova. Made provided security from the goal and her teammates showed their mettle to return to an eleven-goal tie. Dely Leiva returned to the match with renewed energy and scored two goals in a matter of seconds, but a two-minute penalty to Lucía Olivier slowed the progress in the quarter (14-13).

After the break, the match entered a phase of back-and-forth blows, but Made Cortez's accuracy allowed the aurinegro team to move ahead (17-14, min 4). Unfortunately, shortly after, in the fifth minute, Mónica Cabrera left the Tías court as she twisted her ankle after stepping on a rival. Lucía Olivier continued doing her thing; the player from Tías is on a roll at the start of the season when she gallops down her corner (20-16, min.8). The León team surprised with each new possession, stampeding into attack. A certain lack of control arrived in both squads. Casanova put an individual defense on Cecilia Colmenero and they arrived at the midpoint of the second half six up (23-17). These were the best minutes for the locals. A fast counterattack by Najara Gabaldón put the maximum difference on the scoreboard (24-17, min.17).

Cleba started a full-court press that caused some problems for the home team, prompting Jesús Casanova to call a timeout to try and patch things up. The León team scored two penalties in a row, but Made Cortez saved the third, halting the visitors' momentum (25-24, min. 25).

Puerto del Carmen didn't back down, Nayra Gil scored a penalty after a good play by Brenda Torres, and Najara Gabaldón put the final nail in the coffin for Cleba with a wonderful lob (28-22, min.28). A red card for Dely Leiva with fourteen seconds left until the end couldn't spoil a match that becomes the first victory of the season for the Tiñosan team. For the aurinegro coach, Jesús Casanova, "it was a good game, very hard-fought with two teams that played with a lot of intensity, wanting to do well. It was a pretty nice game. We always maintained the tempo of the game, attentive to their counterattacks. They are a very dangerous team, especially in the rise of the ball to counterattack. We tried to manage the efforts a lot and rotate the players a lot, especially in the first half. As a result, we lost the tempo of the game a little bit, around the 20th minute of the first half, but it is also true that this option gave us the possibility of arriving a little fresher than the rival in the second half. You could see the hard work we have been doing since the preseason began and I think we arrived in better conditions than the rival in the last phase of the game where we were able to get that advantage that I think was in line with what was seen in the game, based on a good defense and a very good goal. We went out on counterattack when we could, although it is true that we rarely finished, but well, in the organized attack, without much clarity of ideas, but always getting one-on-one situations to be able to get those goals that we needed," concludes Casanova. Jesús Casanova's team will play their match corresponding to the third round of the Women's División de Honor Oro on Saturday, October 11, at 8:00 p.m. (local time), visiting the Florida Arena Municipal Sports Center to face Lobas Global Atac Oviedo, a team that counts its two matches as victories, in the opening day as local against Schar Colores Zaragoza (23-19) and this weekend in their visit to A.D.
