Coalición Canaria, the second most voted list after the elections of May 28, will preside over the Government of the Canary Islands, together with the third candidacy in votes, the Popular Party. The leader of Coalición Canaria (CC), Fernando Clavijo, has been invested as president of the Canary Islands in the first vote with the support of 38 deputies, the absolute majority of the plenary session of the autonomous Parliament, thanks to the agreement reached by the nationalists with the PP, ASG and AHI.
The 19 deputies of CC, the 15 of the PP, the 3 of Agrupación Socialista Gomera (ASG) and the only deputy of Agrupación Herreña Independiente (AHI) voted in favor. 32 deputies voted against: the 23 deputies of the PSOE, the five of Nueva Canarias and the four of Vox.
Clavijo recovers the Government of the Canary Islands, which he already presided over between 2015 and 2019, then thanks to the support of the PSOE.
He succeeds the socialist Ángel Víctor Torres in the presidency of the Canary Islands, whose party was the winner of the elections on May 28, but without the necessary majority to re-edit the progressive pact.
In his last speech before the plenary session before being invested, Clavijo pointed out that the Canary Islands has historical challenges that must be faced from unity and has required that on issues that transcend a legislature, such as the sustainability of public services, insular imbalances or poverty, "we are able to agree".
Regarding his executive, which is expected to hold its first Council of Government on Monday, he said that it is a government of "comrades" of men and women who are going to work to achieve an entrepreneurial future for the Canary Islands "and we are going to discuss among ourselves, with the opposition and with civil society."
The Canary Islands is not condemned to live with its problems as if they were chronic diseases, said Clavijo, who indicated that reality can be changed as ancestors did in worse conditions than the current ones.
"Governments are ephemeral" said the now president of the Canary Islands to require agreements and establish "solid fronts" on issues that affect the Canary Islands because, he added, "let's not play with the things we eat."
Clavijo pointed out that in the Chamber he does not see "any adversary" and has offered his hand for a path "that begins here."
He thanked the parties that support the new Government (Coalición Canaria, Partido Popular, Agrupación Socialista Gomera and Agrupación Herreña Independiente) for putting "the interest of the Canary Islands" above the acronyms and assured that he will put the citizen at the center of management.
