Use of the pronoun 'Vosotros' in the Canary Islands

In the Canary Islands there are areas where the use of the pronoun vosotros is traditional. This is the case on the island of La Gomera, in the northern half, approximately, of the island of La Palma and in some municipalities of the midlands of Tenerife, especially in the south of the island, although in the latter it is mainly maintained among speakers from rural areas and of advanced age. However, it is true that there are Canarian speakers who, influenced by the prevailing norm in some peninsular areas, use the pronoun vosotros in situations in which their parents or their countrymen would use, without hesitation, the form ustedes.

Faced with this reality, which is surely a symptom of the linguistic insecurity of some Canarian speakers, the Canarian Academy of Language considers that the only possible action should be training and information.

Our Foundation works on different fronts (the school, the media, the publication of research, etc.) to convey to the entire Canarian society the fundamental idea that our variety of Spanish is as valid and correct as any other spoken in the Hispanic world and that its use is appropriate in any circumstance. It should also be noted that some Canarian speakers, due to an erroneous interpretation, use vosotros as the plural of usted, that is, as a pronoun of courtesy.
