"This party is legal as long as legality allows it to acquire what it needs; outside the law when it does not allow it to realize its aspirations."
Pablo Iglesias. Congressional Record. May 5, 1910
There are issues that should be untouchable. And I say untouchable referring to their nature as acquired rights. No government of any State should put on the table a debate as important as that of abortion to try to go back to 1985.
It is alarming that in the 21st century there is a right-wing government that, in order to please a radical sector within its own party, is capable of modifying a law that had already been accepted by society and that grants women the right to decide on something as personal and intimate as motherhood.
Can a religious confession have so much power or influence over a government that women are prevented from freely deciding whether to be mothers? Could we understand that the PP follows the guidelines of the increasingly muscular political arm of the Church?
The right of women to decide freely is above legal debates. The controversy over the interruption of pregnancy was resolved with the reform of the Law, in 2010, with a legal text that placed us alongside the majority of European countries.
President Rajoy remembers Europe and its Parliament when he wants forcefulness and support against the separatist process in Catalonia. In the same sense, he should listen to this House when the majority of the groups with representation ask for the withdrawal of the proposal of the Spanish Abortion Law. Only the European PP insists on restricting the rights and freedoms acquired by women after years of struggle and criminalization.
The last word cannot and should not be said. That is why the PSOE has raised its voice and encourages its members to demonstrate against authoritarian policies that have no place in a democratic society of the 21st century, not even under the protection of an absolute majority.
