The survey published a couple of months ago by the Center for Sociological Research (CIS) reflects Immigration as the second most important problem for Spaniards.
60% believe that there are too many immigrants, with the widespread belief that foreigners make up more than 20% of the population when they do not even reach half (9% according to INE counts).
And it is that perhaps opinions are being created in society based on fears, striking news and other messages rather than on data and thoughtful judgments.
The study also reflects that almost half of Spaniards (47%) believe that salaries fall with the incorporation of non-EU workers into the labor market; when the real cause of precariousness lies in the companies that exploit and in society in general that consents to it. And it is that this economy crushes the person with the untouchable argument of maximum benefit and also has the audacity to present the victims as guilty.
However, 65% of Spaniards recognize that immigration is allowed to fill jobs for which there is no labor.
We cannot forget either that the vast majority of emigrants leave their country driven by misery. Poverty, injustice and inequality of which we are largely accomplices and beneficiaries.
We are in a moment of contradictory feelings and judgments in Spanish society. Let's not let coexistence be poisoned. Let's put aside unjustified fears and read the current situation as an opportunity for personal and social enrichment. Let's work and urge organizations so that people who decide to emigrate can lead a dignified and full life.
