For the heroes of the countryside

It was enough for me to plant potatoes twice to know the harshness of the countryside, in which I am not even a humble amateur. A tough activity where they exist, it is essential for every town, especially in Teguise because of its history, tradition and possibilities, for the luck of our Municipality.

As luck is to count for me with Rubén Cejudo or the son of Benigno, our Benito Rodríguez, so that the primary sector is very present in our proposals and agriculture is a priority. They, members of the Teguise2019 team, do know the reality of an activity to which we owe a lot, which fed us in difficult times and which allows us to maintain the island's greatest heritage: our landscape.

To all those who make it possible despite the difficulties: thank you, and also some proposals to make their work easier from May because much more and better things can be done when we talk about Teguise's agriculture, as shown:

It is essential that this matter be coordinated by someone who knows, who shares the harshness and difficulties of the farmers of our Municipality and who remains in office to avoid having three agriculture councilors in four years. Thus planning, projecting and doing is quite an odyssey.

This is to begin with, to make it possible to provide agricultural water to all our heroes of the countryside who wait for years for a meter, without the City Council raising its voice so that Canal Gestión and the Water Consortium get their act together on this matter. Without access to agricultural water with guarantees of power and regularity in its use, everything is more difficult as they tell me.

Help them with advice, renewed machinery or subsidies to improve their farms, to diversify their crops and not to find a "come back tomorrow" when they request the municipal tractor, too often under repair.

Promote the so-called kilometer zero, or in Christian terms, bet on the municipality's products through the KM0 tapas route, small gastronomic fairs throughout the year and a quality seal of the Teguise countryside.

Reinforce the surveillance of the farms so that they do not steal from our farmers what it costs so much to sow and harvest, with a guard to watch over the plantations that are carried out in the Complex and the chives do not disappear, and with an increase in the number of local police in Teguise to reinforce the service, including the surveillance of the countryside.

Collaborate with young people from branches such as Basic or adapted FP in agro-gardening or nursery activities who are trained in our IES Teguise, willing to recover the Complex's greenhouse for the production of native ornamental plants. Count on it!

Clarify the "Mystery of the Complex", underutilized when we talk about agriculture and full of doubts about its state and use that is being given to it. I understand those who long for past times, which were better when we talk about agriculture in the Municipality and the importance that the Agroindustrial Complex had to support our people from the countryside.

And yes, I am not a man of the countryside. I already told you at the beginning that I only planted potatoes twice in my life and once I harvested in La Geria together with my friend Pedro Suárez, but what I do know is that the potatoes from Los Valles deserve a day of celebration in which to share such a delicacy with the neighbors, visitors and our farmers.

These are some of our proposals for those architects of the landscape that César Manrique said, true heroes and heroines to whom we owe so much. From May we get to work.

Let's work together for that Teguise countryside!
