For the last 20 years, Arrecife has been completely neglected and abandoned by the same parties that have always governed in the City Council: PSOE, PIL and CC. The results of their management are evident and we can all see, regardless of the ideology that each of us has, that they have been two decades of inactivity and paralysis in which Arrecife has been resigned to its fate by rulers who neither cared about this city, nor were able to change it, nor ever believed in it. When we listen to nationalists and socialists offer their electoral programs and say that they are going to improve Arrecife from May 22, the question that arises is inevitable: why haven't they done it before, during the 20 years they have been governing? If they haven't done it in more than two decades of government (which is said soon), why are we going to believe now that they will? They have had more than enough time, and at this point, what credibility can they offer to the citizens of Arrecife?
However, as a PP candidate for Mayor of Arrecife, when a little over a year ago, I decided to resign from my seat as a deputy in Congress, I did so for one reason only: to dedicate myself exclusively to Arrecife, because I deeply believe in this city and its enormous opportunities and my goal is to turn Arrecife into the best city in the Canary Islands and the most beautiful capital with the highest quality of life for all its inhabitants.
Since the arrival of the Popular Party to the Mayor's Office of this city, just 16 months ago, we have wanted to generate hope and confidence, promoting dynamism and economic activity by opening Arrecife to Tourism through the Saturday market and trying to ensure that the people of Arrecife can once again enjoy their municipality.
In the short time we have had the opportunity to govern, we are demonstrating that things can change in Arrecife: we are carrying out numerous actions in the neighborhoods of Arrecife: streets, paving, sidewalks, lighting and we are cleaning and improving the condition of many facades to change the face of this city.
But the time we have had is very short and it is necessary to continue along this line. Fundamentally, we must develop the great opportunities that Arrecife has: the Sports Pier, with its shipyard for megayachts; turn the Cruise Pier into a home port; build and finish the Congress Palace; revitalize the Charco de San Ginés and finish the Sea Museum, the House of Culture and the History Museum, as well as continue with the II Neighborhood Plan that we have just started. Likewise, we have already demolished the La Rocar warehouses and from now on my proposal is to promote the Icon of the Islote del Francés, leaving 90% of the land for public use and enjoyment of all the people of Arrecife, and the remaining 10% for the construction of an emblematic building that becomes a distinctive seal of the city of Arrecife at an international level.
With all these initiatives, we will be able to obtain very important economic resources for the City Council, which will revert to more and better public services for all the neighborhoods of Arrecife: more lighting, more police presence, better educational centers, etc. In addition, this city must be provided with public parks and green areas, as well as the necessary sports, cultural, health and commercial infrastructures, including equipment for our elders and our young people.
We, the rulers, have to make decisions and act, because Arrecife needs to promote movement and economic dynamism, to create wealth and jobs, which is what we need most at the moment, impacting and generating activity in all the neighborhoods of Arrecife and in the entire city as a whole. In particular, I do not forget those families in Arrecife who are unfortunately unemployed, because I know they are having a bad time. We cannot sit idly by or debate eternally about what needs to be done, as has been done in recent years.
Because there have been too many years in which nothing has been done. We must not forget that it has always been the same people who have been governing. Now we have to make a decision and it is in our hands to make Arrecife change. From the Popular Party we are demonstrating that, if we continue in this line of work, Arrecife can become the best and most beautiful capital of the Canary Islands, where all the people of Arrecife have the opportunity to be happy and enjoy the well-being we deserve. I encourage all the citizens of Arrecife to join forces to achieve that goal.
