The San Bartolomé City Council is trying to create social and cultural ties that improve the quality of life of citizens and involve them in a common municipal project. Aware that the term AJEI is a symbol of the identity of our town, it wanted to recover it and add it to its name.

It wishes, we wish, that from now on, San Bartolomé becomes SAN BARTOLOME DE AJEI. This addition of the toponym Ajei cannot be done without the participation of the people who live in our municipality. To this end, and by unanimous plenary agreement of the municipal political groups, the City Council has requested, in accordance with the legislation of the State and the Autonomous Community, and authorization from the State Government, to submit the addition of the term to a POPULAR CONSULTATION to know the popular will.

Therefore, Citizen of San Bartolomé, your vote in this consultation is very important. Before deciding, you should know the antiquity of Ajei, its historical relationship with our municipality, or its usefulness from an administrative point of view. For this, within the HISTORICAL THURSDAYS 2.005, in this coming month of July, the corporation has organized a Cycle of Talks on the archaeological heritage of Ajei, its memory, its meaning and its importance, with the best specialists on this toponym, Antonio Montelongo, Alexis Falero, Silvano Corujo, Marcial Morera, José Hernández and Rita Marrero, which you should not miss in order to vote consciously afterwards. Your right is to participate and decide the future name.

Ajei is a name closely linked to San Bartolomé. Its presence is attested by the naming of schools, Colegio Ajei, emblematic houses, Casa Ajei, sports groups, Ajei bowling club, folk groups, Agrupación Ajei, and theater groups, Grupo Ajei, or commercial establishments, taxi associations,...It also appears on our municipal coat of arms written with a Latin " i ", although as a proper name it could have another variant " AJEY ".

The official and institutional spelling is AJEI and, therefore, it will be the one added to the name of the municipality: SAN BARTOLOME DE AJEI. The addition of Ajei is also very important from an administrative point of view. With it, the municipality will avoid similarities and confusions with other Canary Island towns such as San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Finally, if the State Government gives us the authorization, we hope to hold the POPULAR CONSULTATION next November. GET INFORMED AND PARTICIPATE.
