The deputy of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) Yoné Caraballo demanded this Tuesday, in the plenary session of Parliament, the dismissal of the general director of Hemodonation and Hemotherapy, Iván Santiago Falcón, for the “terrible management of the service evidenced in the critical situation of blood reserves in the Archipelago." The health spokesperson for the progressive nationalist group stated that Health “cannot be managed as a political chiringuito while the Canary Islands runs out of blood.”
He maintained that “people no longer trust a system that saves lives and that is very serious” while supporting the union demonstration called for next Saturday, under the slogan For a safe and quality blood bank.
In the first government control session of the new session period of the Chamber, Yoné Caraballo demanded the immediate adoption of measures in the face of the “deficient results in the management of the general directorate, which directly affects the availability of blood in hospitals."
Caraballo warned the Minister of Health, Soledad Monzón, that the blood crisis "is no longer a temporary problem or due to the summer, but the consequence of a political direction" that he described as “ghostly." Iván Santiago Falcón “is not there, or if he is there he does not know and does not know how” Hemodonation works, according to Nueva Canarias.
He denounced that blood reserves in the islands remain at “critical levels,” putting scheduled operations and cancer treatments at risk, among others. According to the data shown to the plenary by Caraballo, between January and August 2024, 41,189 donations were recorded, while in the same period of 2025, only 39,442 were reached, which is 1,747 less.
He also pointed out that on September 2, there were barely 34 bags of O negative blood, a group considered a universal donor and “vital” in emergency cases.
Faced with these complaints, Minister Monzón denied the figures provided by the NC-BC parliamentarian, despite the fact that Caraballo exhibited tables extracted from the Canary Islands Government itself that Health has stopped publishing, denounced the progressive nationalist deputy.
He also reproached the "suppression of the representation of more than 200 service workers and the lack of hiring despite the integration decree approved in 2024." “The management has demotivated the staff and has deteriorated citizen confidence in a system that saves lives,” said the nationalist spokesperson on health matters.
Yoné Caraballo supported the demonstration called by the workers for next Saturday in protest at the “terrible management of blood in the Canary Islands,” which shows the social dimension of the problem for Nueva Canarias-BC.
He demanded that Soledad Monzón "act bravely." “She was brave when she dismissed the previous general director. Now she also has to be brave and dismiss a ghostly general director.” He recommended that the minister “should leave” the electoral agreement of Coalición Canaria and its general secretary and president of the Executive, Fernando Clavijo, with Unidos por Gran Canaria. “We cannot use the Government as a political chiringuito at the expense of people's health,” he reproached.
