The plenary session of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has unanimously approved the adoption of urgent measures to promote energy saving in the facilities dependent on the institution.
The motion, presented by the Nationalist Group (CC-PNC) and defended by the councillor Óscar Pérez Cabrera, will oblige the institution "to lead by example" in terms of responsible use of energy.
In their initiative, the nationalists also propose that the Cabildo make "reasonable and efficient use" of the vehicles at its disposal, without this implying renouncing any benefit.
"We believe that in Lanzarote and La Graciosa measures can also be applied, such as those already being carried out in other areas of the European Union, to put a stop to the burning of fossil fuels. And with much more reason, if we take into account that we are a Biosphere Reserve", says the councillor, who insists that all these actions must be accompanied by a dissemination campaign aimed at the entire population, with suggestions for the responsible use of energy.
However, Pérez makes a call for attention and recalls that "although we have achieved something as important as approving these measures unanimously, it is useless if they are not put into practice later".
Therefore, he explains that with actions "as simple" as the generalisation of teleworking, the use of a responsible temperature in the air conditioning systems of buildings or the promotion of sustainable micromobility, it would be possible to "considerably reduce the consumption of hydrocarbons which in Lanzarote and La Graciosa currently amounts to 452,155 tonnes".
"This is everyone's responsibility, we must not forget it", stresses Pérez Cabrera. "It is our institutions that must set an example".
