The jury of floats of the Carnival of Arrecife 2011 decided this Monday

to award the first prize of the contest to Toy Story. Meanwhile, the

Metamorphosis and The Brides of Arrieta floats have obtained the second

and third prize of this contest, where almost 70

floats finally participated. The three floats will be part of this Wednesday, starting at

6:00 p.m., of the Burial of the Sardine, which will depart from the City Hall

of Arrecife to the Reducto beach, in front of the theme park, where

it will be burned. The fireworks will conclude the Carnival of

Arrecife this year, dedicated to the world of opera.

Thus, the jury composed of Juan Carlos Tavío Corujo, Dj; José

Luis Salazar de Frías, prosecutor; Eloísa Batista Robayna, photographer; and

Paco Robayna, director of R. and R. Comunicaciones, awarded the first

prize to the Toy Story float, from Haría, whose authors

will receive a check for 900 euros. The second prize went to the float

Metamorphosis, from La Vegueta in the municipality of Tinajo, which was awarded 600 euros,

while the third prize went to Las Novias de Arrieta, from

Arrieta, who obtained a prize of 450 euros.

Thousands of masquerades invaded the main streets of

Arrecife this Monday in the most massive event of these festivities, the Grand Parade

of Floats of the Carnival of Arrecife 2011. In addition to majestic

opera characters, from

sympathetic chickens, to Indians, Japanese, Vikings, tigers, Mr. Potato or

the Minnies of a lifetime. There was also no shortage of Bob

Sponge, policemen, doctors, Flintstones, mimes, cabaret girls/boys,

pirates, wild flowers, the Spanish soccer team and the Paul octopus

or our beloved Charlot, Juan Medina, who once again participated in the

Carnival of Arrecife.

The Grand Parade of the Carnival of Arrecife 2010, in which almost

70 floats participated, in addition to the murgas, comparsas and batucadas, concluded with the

cleaning of the same streets invaded minutes before by the masquerades.

A squad from Urbaser, the company that provides the cleaning service

of Arrecife, was in charge during the night of Monday and the early hours of this

Tuesday to clean the entire Avenida Medular, in addition to the two stages

where the carnival festivals took place, that is, the area of the

Warehouse, and the José Ramírez Cerdá park
