Tías approves a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan focused on pedestrians, bicycles and buses

The project has an investment of 16 million euros eligible for subsidies from European funds and state, regional and island entities.

The City Council of Tías approved a decree with the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) of the municipality. These measures include the positions of the social agents of the municipality, who have been consulted through an open platform, as well as measures that contemplate a leading role for cycling, pedestrians and public transport.

The document, which has an investment of 16 million euros eligible for subsidies from European funds and state, regional and island entities, is committed to an efficient network of bike lanes that mainly covers the connection of Tías and Puerto del Carmen, added to a network of "coexistence paths" between the towns.

It includes the widening of sidewalks in areas such as the LZ35 road from the center of Tías towards La Candelaria, the creation of single roads that give priority to pedestrians over vehicles, dissuasive parking in Tías and Puerto del Carmen and better bus connection, mainly with Masdache and the Doctor Molina Orosa Hospital.

The Tías SUMP proposes to create a cycling network in the municipality, completing the existing one in Puerto del Carmen, creating new lanes in streets such as Juan Carlos I, Anzuelo, Noruega and Reina Sofía; and taking advantage of traditional roads to create coexistence paths connecting all the towns, from Masdache to Conil, passing through La Asomada, Mácher, Tegoyo, Tías and Puerto del Carmen.

In the center of the town of Tías, it is planned to create a "cycle lane" to avoid eliminating parking spaces and combine the use of bicycles with pedestrians and vehicles. In addition, it is committed to building an accessible upper walkway with a bike lane connecting the urban center and the Los Lirios area and the IES Tías, in addition to widening the sidewalks of the underpasses.

The Mobility Plan has been prepared by the consulting firm Doymo, whose mobility technician and urban planner, Kerstin Kelinert, explained last year at a press conference the relevance of promoting a change in behavior of active mobility, public transport and other clean and intelligent transport solutions.

Kerstin Kleinert pointed out in the plenary hall of the City Council that "the bike lane network is designed for the inhabitants, not only for the visitors, that is, so that citizens can travel by bike to take the children to school and to buy bread, for example. Currently, 67% of trips to school are made by car and we want to lower those percentages."

Likewise, among many other actions, it is proposed to establish two dissuasion parking lots connected with a circular urban bus line and with accessible sidewalks to Avenida de las Playas to reduce traffic in Puerto del Carmen. These dissuasive parking lots would be located in the area of Rambla Islas Canarias, near the streets César Manrique and Anzuelo; and near Calle Finlandia.

Regarding public transport, in addition to the creation of the circular line in Puerto del Carmen, it is suggested to connect the municipality with the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, in Arrecife, in addition to incorporating Masdache into the urban line 34 and providing the IES Tías section with a double directional sense of the bus.

Among the numerous proposals, the regulation of parking in Puerto del Carmen through the creation of green parking areas for residents and occupied and blue zones for itinerant vehicles, whose implementation must be agreed with those affected, also stands out. The document includes the establishment of charging points for electric vehicles and areas with smart parking, an application to instantly know the free parking spaces in some streets and parking areas.
