The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo, confirmed this Wednesday in Parliament that the construction works of phase I of the Radiotherapy Oncology Unit of the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital of Lanzarote are being carried out according to the planned deadline and that the completion date communicated by the awarding company is set for next October.
The Minister pointed out that, after the resumption of work on March 4, after a period of two months in which they remained temporarily suspended, the works are progressing "at a good pace", having completed the construction of the bunker room, in which the linear accelerator will be installed.
At the moment, the works are focused on the adjoining rooms and the Ministry of Health states that, if the execution rate is maintained as until now, the planned completion date will be met.
Regarding the procedure for contracting radiotherapy equipment, Trujillo pointed out that the Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín University Hospital has been in charge of preparing the Technical Specifications and that both this specification, as well as the certificates of exclusivity, are finished, which will allow the tender to be initiated.
Likewise, he indicated that a micro-accelerator will be acquired to implement intraoperative radiotherapy in breast surgery, which will allow radiotherapy treatments to be applied to patients undergoing mastectomy during the same surgical act.
The Radiotherapy Oncology Unit of the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital will have two consulting rooms, a professional work area, an administrative support area, waiting rooms and the bunker.
For the construction of the bunker, more than 1,000 cubic meters of reinforced concrete have been projected and 1,700 linear meters have been drilled to install the foundation micropiles.
The works have a budget of 2,014,224 euros and are financed by the European Regional Development Fund, by 85 percent.
