The works of the urban park of Playa Honda, the "largest in the Canary Islands" started this Monday. The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, the Minister of Public Works, Alfredo Mendoza, and the mayor of the San Bartolomé City Council, Isidro Pérez, moved to the site to assess the works that are being carried out on the plot of almost seven hectares. During the visit they were accompanied by the Councilor for Works of the municipality, Raúl de León, the head of the work, Pablo Cabrera, and the facultative direction.

Corujo was "very excited" with the beginning of the works of a "dynamic project of the island that is, in addition, fundamental for the municipality of San Bartolomé". "It will be a social lung, a public space designed and created to structure coexistence and unite human relations, and that will contribute, in addition, to improve the physical and mental health of people," he said.

For his part, the mayor of the municipality expressed his desire that the Playa Honda Urban Park become "a cultural orchard for the neighbors", and his total confidence that the established deadlines will be met so that "in fifteen months we can enjoy the largest urban park in the archipelago," he added.

The urban park of Playa Honda

The Playa Honda Urban Park will be a public space dedicated to community initiatives in order to revitalize economic activities and promote the functionality of Playa Honda. The infrastructure aims to break down social barriers and promote the integration of the population and groups of the municipality in spaces for relationships, coworking and through meetings and celebrations.

The project is designed from a basic element, the crater as a characteristic element of the island's landscape, which will host the different uses that will be developed in the urban park. A network of paths connects the square in the southern area and the promenade.

The Playa Honda Urban Park will have spaces for the development of community, social and cultural initiatives, as well as spaces for the recreation of pets, kiosks and green areas that will also be a "green lung" for the municipality.

The work has a budget of 3 million euros and is part of the set of actions of the European Regional Development Fund, within the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy "Conurban Azul" of the Sustainable Growth Operational Program 2014-2020.
