The works of the La Destila school, awarded two months ago but without a start date

The construction of the new La Destila school still does not have a start date. This has been acknowledged to La Voz by the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, stating that it will not be known when the works will start until the technical and facultative direction of the works is contracted. Education announced that the work had been awarded to Satocan on April 5 and that the company then had 10 days to accept the award and "start the procedures for the construction" of the educational center.

However, almost two months later, when asked by La Voz, they have referred to the contracting of that technical direction and have admitted that they do not know for the moment when the works will begin. The contracting process of that technical team also depends on the Ministry, which states that it is progressing "in parallel" to the tender for the work and is taking "a little longer." According to them, it is "in process" and it is not yet known which company will take charge of it.

Thus, from Education they limit themselves to pointing out that this process will conclude "shortly" and then "it will be possible to know exactly when the works begin." Despite this, the Ministry has not specified or limited the time frame that this could entail. In fact, they have not even confirmed that the contracting of the technical direction will take place during this month.

The old La Destila school was demolished in December 2014. Since then, its students have been receiving classes in other centers in Arrecife and a good part of them do so in modular classrooms. The construction of the center has been generating criticism for the "delays" and the "paralysis", after the succession of dates given by the Administration to start the works. In its last forecast before awarding the works, Education assured that the construction of the new school would begin before the end of 2015.

Finally, the work was awarded in April to the company Satocan for about 3.1 million euros, which represents a reduction of 1.6 million compared to the base budget of the tender. The new building will have 18 units, will have three floors and capacity for 450 students. The execution period of the work will be 24 months, counting from when the works begin.
