The residents of Argana Alta request that a state of emergency be declared to repair the damage from the floods

The neighborhood association of Argana Alta and the representatives of those affected by the floods in the neighborhood have demanded, one hundred days after those rains, both the mayor of Arrecife, Cándido Reguera, and the president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, that a state of emergency be declared in the neighborhood to allow the enabling of an extraordinary credit to alleviate the situation.

The residents have sent letters to both in which they express their discontent with their actions and for not having resolved the problem yet. They tell Reguera that he has disappointed them because "he is not interested in the misfortunes of his own neighbors." They ask him to "find the money wherever it is to resume the works on the sanitation network so that these events never happen again" and to process the repair of the damages as a matter of urgency.

They assure that neither Reguera nor the other two parties that make up the government group (PIL and PNL) are up to the task. "It seems that the mayor doesn't have money for this, but there is money for advisors, to promote his personal image and for unnecessary fireworks," the residents say.

For his part, they thank Paulino Rivero "for the interest he took in quickly drafting the technical project to improve the Arrecife sanitation network, which he has already sent to us," but they emphasize that "we expect much more from the president of the Canary Islands."

Background in El Hierro

They recall in the letter that the Government of the Canary Islands, then presided over by Adán Martín, signed in 2007 a decree of exceptional aid for the floods in El Hierro only two weeks after the rains, and they request that the same be done in this case, as well as that extraordinary items be enabled for the works and to repair the damage caused to the homes.

The residents ask Rivero to "find the money wherever it is to resume the works on the sanitation network so that these events never happen again." "It is unacceptable that the state of emergency has not yet been declared in the neighborhood, which would allow the enabling of an extraordinary credit to alleviate the situation, as well as processing the repair of the damages and the improvement and completion of the sanitation network as a matter of urgency," they point out.
