The PSOE has publicly denounced that "its patience has run out" in the face of "the wild incompetence" of the mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León. The opposition party has stated that De León "knows that the city's main tourist attraction, El Reducto beach, is contaminated with fecal waste right down to the sand, and he is doing absolutely nothing".
In this regard, the socialist party has highlighted that the mayor of Arrecife and his departments of Beaches and Tourism "have been absent since the capital's beach was closed almost a month ago." "At this point, the logical thing would be to have a diagnosis and a schedule of actions, but instead, **we have new parties scheduled**," commented Cristina Duque.
The party has stated that it is "the height of incompetence, the messages sent to citizens are that the beach opens, that the beach closes, allowing children to carry out activities on sand that now oozes black water right on the beach".
The socialist party has highlighted that "they have held back to avoid creating alarm or a bad image, but everything has its limits". In this regard, the PSOE has indicated that, from day one, the Governing Group has to "mobilize all available resources to have an urgent diagnosis, and instead, they have dedicated themselves to wasting money on parties, as stated by Cristina Duque, the PSOE councilwoman".
"While the beach is contaminated with sewage, the mayor of Arrecife is concerned with putting up a giant Santa Claus, the Three Wise Men, and a lot of lights right in front of the waste. It's as if Santa Claus were going to clean the beach, a real mockery of the citizens," he added. In this regard, they have recalled that the Water consortium, "is in the hands of Domingo Cejas and Oswaldo Betancort from Coalición Canaria, two classics of that party's traditional incompetence, and that if no one does anything, we could end up with the beach closed forever."
The city's largest accommodation plant
From the political party they have recalled that the El Reducto area houses the city's largest accommodation plant and one of the most important local leisure spots. The opposition party has insisted that Yonathan de León "should be working to have reports, forecasts, and a serious diagnosis in a month of continuous spills". However, they have assured that for him "nothing is a priority except the party to which all the technical and economic resources of the municipality are directed".
"Let's hope he has a gap between one festival and another, between one Christmas and another, and attends to a city abandoned to its fate, including its main beach already closed," Duque states.
Finally, they have pointed out that "de León has normalized living with non-functioning traffic lights, rats, which he does not fumigate, cockroaches, dirt, etc., and now finds that the city's main beach has been closed due to a spill for almost a month".
