The PSOE obtains unanimous support from the Arrecife Plenary to not "politicize" Manrique's centenary

The Socialist Party of Arrecife obtained unanimous support this Tuesday for the proposed resolution aimed at avoiding the "politicization and interested use" of the celebrations of the first centenary of the birth of César Manrique.

Given the coincidence of dates with the electoral event in May 2019, the socialists advocated "avoiding stumbling" and defining a program of events "agreed upon with groups, political forces and administrations, sensible but ambitious, that avoids reiterations and attends to all sensitivities, under the supervision of the Foundation, responsible for the artist's legacy," said the party's spokesperson, Jimena Álvarez.

According to the Consistory, "all groups highlighted the success of the motion, understanding the certain risks that tributes to César Manrique may be distorted if they are linked to the electoral contest."

Other motions approved

The remaining proposed resolutions of the PSOE, approved by a majority, were aimed at strengthening inclusive language in municipal documentation, "because language constructs reality and a councilwoman is not a councilman nor is a female worker a male worker," according to the Councilor for Equality, Victoria Sande; to make sustainability policies a transversal axis of all public management; and to prioritize the construction of a residence for people without resources, elderly or sick, equipped with quality services that guarantee the dignity of users.

The local secretary of the socialists of Arrecife and councilor, David Duarte, expressed his "surprise" at the abstentions of the Ganemos group on motions related to egalitarian language and with a gender perspective or with urban sustainability objectives. "Once again, Podemos' municipal brand in Lanzarote overrides its own ideology of progress to settle into empty and meaningless criticism," said the councilor.

In her various interventions throughout the Plenary on the state of the city, the socialist mayor Eva de Anta defended "the achievements of a government in minority, with a shortage of staff and regulatory novelties, which however has carried out complex specifications such as those for traffic lights, mechanical workshops for the mobile park or public lighting, the hiring of three social workers, the management of subsidies for electric vehicles or the reorganization of the staff to provide Human Resources."
