The PSOE of Lanzarote has denounced this Monday the "historic failure" of Fernando Clavijo's government (CC-PP) with the island, after confirming that 95% of the regional budget allocated for Lanzarote in 2025 will remain unexecuted.
The insular secretary and congresswoman, María Dolores Corujo, explained at a press conference that, according to a written response from the regional government itself, of the 130 million euros budgeted for Lanzarote, only 6.5 million have been executed, which represents 5.62%.
"We are facing the worst execution level on record. Of everything budgeted for Lanzarote, only 5.62% has been executed, and practically all of it corresponds to the Maneje housing inherited from the socialist administration. It is a historic failure of the Clavijo Government with this island," stated CorujoThe socialist leader denounced that, to this execution data, is added a way of presenting the accounts that is "tricky, unfair, and manipulative" for Lanzarote and La Graciosa: "Regional items are incorporated and presented as if they were island investment to inflate the figure and sell here supposed 'best budgets in history.' That is budgetary engineering, and the most serious thing is that Oswaldo Betancort endorses it instead of defending this island," she stated.
38 amendments for 30 million to correct the treatment of Lanzarote
Faced with this situation, Corujo explained that the PSOE of Lanzarote is not limited to criticism, but has registered 38 amendments to the Canary Islands Budgets for 2026, for an approximate amount of 30 million euros specifically aimed at Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
These amendments strengthen public housing with 6.5 million euros "in a context of housing emergency where it is not acceptable to cut back or live solely on inherited projects"; healthcare, with allocations for the Playa Honda Health Center and the reform of the Insular Hospital; and education, with investments in the CEO of Costa Teguise, the Los Chinijos Children's School, and other actions in educational centers
The package also includes more than 10 million euros for the integrated water cycle, with special attention to networks and sanitation; resources for territory and heritage, with a specific allocation for La Geria; reinforcement of social policies, with one million euros for the Plan against Poverty in Lanzarote; and various key infrastructures, including the Playa Blanca Day Center, the Los Hervideros–El Golfo road, and the Playa Blanca Avenue
"What we are proposing is a clear rectification: less window dressing, fewer inflated items, and more real investment in housing, public services, water, social cohesion, and territory," Corujo summarized.
“2025 has been a lost year for Lanzarote”
In her assessment, María Dolores Corujo was emphatic: "The conclusion is clear: 2025 has been a lost year for this island. A year in which Lanzarote has not progressed, in which problems have become chronic, and in which the Cabildo has demonstrated a lack of direction, management, and political leadership."
Corujo recalled that when a government doesn't govern, the citizenry pays for it: "We're talking about young people who can't become independent, families who can't make ends meet, people who work and, even so, can't live on their own island. We're talking about elderly people waiting for help, exhausted caregiver families, and people with disabilities whose rights are repeatedly delayed.""All of this is happening while the housing emergency worsens, while Lanzarote suffers from evident saturation of services, resources, and territory, and while the Cabildo looks the other way, more concerned with trips, fairs, and headlines than with opening a serious debate about the island's tourism model and future."
The insular secretary concluded that Lanzarote cannot afford to waste any more time: "Lanzarote deserves a present government, one that plans, manages, and cares; an island project that thinks about the people who live here, not about the photo op or the headline. In the face of paralysis, a project; in the face of propaganda, management; in the face of disconnection, commitment to this land and its people. Because Lanzarote cannot afford to lose any more years. And neither can its citizens".
