The socialist deputy Miguel González and the senator for Lanzarote, Marcos Hernández, have demanded that the Cabildo and business organizations "cease their smear campaign against the airport, the gateway for our visitors."
According to González, "while a large delegation of politicians and businessmen is being transferred to the Fitur tourism fair to sell the island's excellences, in Lanzarote the criticism of the airport is intensifying, interested, unfair and totally false."
In addition, the deputy has asked the business community to have the same level of criticism, action and demands on the Government of the Canary Islands in its investment policy, "which has once again discriminated against Lanzarote in its 2011 Budget compared to the rest of the islands."
The representatives of the PSOE of Lanzarote in Madrid have valued in a press conference the meeting with the president of AENA, which in their opinion was "fruitful and has opened the doors to a fluid and top-level communication." González and Hernández's vision clashes with that of the business community, which described this meeting with Aena as "disappointing."
The keys to the "fruitful" meeting
However, for the socialists this meeting has brought with it the entry into operation of the new approach maneuver in April; the current study of the possibilities of installing a satellite system for very adverse weather situations; the definitive drafting of the Guacimeta airport master plan, which could be completed in early summer, and progress in impact studies, which will shed light on the best option for extending the runway.
For his part, Senator Marcos Hernández emphasized Aena's interest in the Lanzarote airport, "which has been chosen as the first green facility in its infrastructure network, with the gradual incorporation of innovations in environmental material and renewable energies."
