The PSOE of Lanzarote has emphasized the majority position expressed by the members of the Council of the Biosphere Reserve in its last session, in which the Strategic Environmental Assessment procedure of the new Island Plan for Territorial Organization (PIOLC) was addressed.
"The majority of the Council was clear and forceful: the PIOLC cannot move forward without a rigorous study of the island's carrying capacity, nor without addressing the phenomenon of vacation rentals for what it is, a tourist use of the land," explained the Socialist councilor Ariagona González, who participated in the advisory body's session.
During his speech, González argued that the land law and regional regulations "grant island plans powers in tourism matters, and therefore they must take a position on the use of land for vacation rentals." "This is not a minor technical issue. It is one of the keys to the island model that is intended to be designed, and the PIOL cannot continue to evade it," he added.
The councilor criticized "the attitude of the Island Government, which did not issue any pronouncements on the content of the document drafted by Gesplan, nor on any of the substantive issues raised by the members of the Council, such as camping, aquaculture, or the agro-industrial complex."
"The document was presented as if it were something separate from the Government. Neither Samuel Martín nor any other member of the Executive spoke about its content. And the Popular Party, which is part of the government group, also remained completely silent," he lamented.
The PSOE insists that "the PIOLC is the key instrument to organize the future of Lanzarote and that it requires political leadership, not just technical processing." "It is not enough to commission documents. We must lead the island model and make decisions. Governing is about taking responsibility, not just moderating debates," González concluded.
