The PSOE of Lanzarote has accused the Minister of Social Welfare of the Cabildo, Marciano Acuña, of "mocking families" by participating in the celebration of Amavir's 19th anniversary after months without demanding accountability from the company for what happened in the nursing homes of Tías and Haría.
The general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote and deputy in Congress, María Dolores Corujo, has denounced that it is "infamous" that the government of Oswaldo Betancort finds time to celebrate with the awarded company while families continue to wait for explanations, measures, and consequences for events that, according to the supervision minutes, "reflect a situation of enormous gravity in public centers intended for the care of the elderly and dependent people".
The PSOE recalls that the supervision minutes record very serious deficiencies in the care provided in the residences, including the prolonged lack of medical personnel, problems in medication administration, lack of basic materials, hygiene deficiencies, lack of bedding, incidents in food, and situations incompatible with the dignity that must be guaranteed to the elderly in a public service, such as the presence of bladed weapons and substances belonging to profiles not compatible with the geriatric profile who lived with the elderly.
"While families have demanded answers and responsibilities, Marciano Acuña has spent these months delaying decisions, evading explanations, and allowing the company to calmly reach its anniversary celebration without the Cabildo having acted with the forcefulness that the situation demanded," she has denounced.
Corujo has also emphasized that, as stated in the supervision minutes, Marciano Acuña "did not show up for any of the visits made to the residences, despite the gravity of the known facts and the alarm generated among families."
"It is scandalous that the minister who should have been in charge, facing the situation and personally verifying what was happening, does not appear in any of the supervision visits and now finds time to attend and celebrate with Amavir. For the families there was no presence, there were no answers, and there were no solutions. For the company, there is a photo, an event, and a celebration," stated Corujo.
The PSOE considers that this attitude summarizes "the concept of government" installed in the Cabildo of Lanzarote under the presidency of Oswaldo Betancort: "the permanent party".
"This government finds time for parties, photos, events, celebrations, and toasts, but it does not find time to give answers to families, demand responsibilities from the company, or guarantee that such serious events will not happen again. It is a government that seems to be always available for the party and always absent when it comes to assuming responsibilities," Corujo has reproached.
Corujo has insisted that the Cabildo "cannot continue to treat this matter as an uncomfortable problem that is let pass with time." In his opinion, families "deserve to know the whole truth about what happened, the elderly deserve real guarantees of care, and the company must face the corresponding consequences if serious breaches have occurred."
"What has happened in the residences demands political responsibility, transparency, and firm measures. What Marciano Acuña is doing is exactly the opposite: delaying, remaining silent, and celebrating with the company. That image is an offense to families and to all people who believe that public services should protect, care for, and respond with humanity," Corujo has concluded.
