The Socialist Party of Lanzarote has denounced that the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, "deliberately lies" when trying to justify his decision to prevent the opposition from having adequate time to study and present amendments to the budgets, resorting to a false comparison with what happened in October 2019.
The socialists have clarified that the 2019 situation that Oswaldo Betancort points to for justification was completely exceptional. After María Dolores Corujo came to power at the Cabildo in July of that year, the institution was without an approved budget, as the previous president, Pedro San Ginés, had not been able to get the accounts through.
Faced with this scenario, the new government was forced to urgently approve the budget in October to guarantee the normal functioning of the Cabildo and prevent essential services, associations, social groups, and projects that depend on public funding from being harmed.
The spokesperson for the Socialist Group, Ariagona González, has been clear about it:“Oswaldo Betancort is lying when he tries to compare two situations that have nothing to do with each other. In 2019, we arrived at the Cabildo without an approved budget due to the inability of the previous CC government, and we had to act urgently to protect the general interest and guarantee the stability of the institution”
González has recalled that that decision responded to a situation inherited that obliged to act with institutional responsibility and with the cooperation of all political groups.
González considers that Betancort is using a false argument to try to justify a decision that responds solely to his political will, and demands that he stop manipulating the facts and act with transparency and respect for the democratic functioning of the institution.
The socialists insist that the current situation does not respond to any inherited urgency, as did happen in 2019, and that the opposition has the right to fully exercise its control and proposal function in defense of the general interest of Lanzarote.
