The working meeting scheduled for this Friday between the federal general secretary of the PSOE, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and the PSC-PSOE, will address the need for a change in the productive model for the future in the Archipelago.
The Canarian socialists base this new model on four keys: a greater investment in innovation and research, a firm commitment to renewable energies, the reinvention of tourism in the islands as a more solid sector, and the promotion of the Canary Islands as a commercial platform between Europe, Africa, and America.
According to the general secretary of the Lanzarote socialists, Carlos Espino, "we cannot expect anything from this Government of the Canary Islands, so it is up to the PSOE to exercise leadership to get out of the crisis and lay the foundations for a new model of economic and productive growth."
The central core of the meeting, which will be held at the Gran Meliá Salinas hotel in Costa Teguise, is to transfer the reflection made from the party in the Islands "beyond the victimizing vision of the Government of the Canary Islands," according to Espino.
The socialists believe that the Canary Islands are a land full of opportunities, both for their geographical location and for their climate, and that they can become a power in renewable energies and in research and development.
Ministries
Thus, the PSC-PSOE will convey to Rodríguez Zapatero the need for the corresponding ministries to get involved in these policies that are demanded from the Archipelago "above the propaganda of the Government of the Canary Islands, which is not a hope for the Canarians," according to Espino.
The PSC-PSOE believes that the Canary Islands now have "a perverse dependence" on tourism and construction and that tourism must be turned into a high-quality sector, being at the forefront in that regard.
They emphasize that currently the Autonomous Community is at the bottom in investment in R&D and in renewable energies and, however, is at the top in school failure and in family indebtedness and that is why "the Canary Islands must find a new place."
