The Cabildo of Lanzarote has presented a new educational project called L@s Majit@s, in collaboration with the Juan Brito Foundation, which was created with the intention of awakening the interest, respect and critical spirit of boys and girls about the cultural and natural heritage of Lanzarote, and in order to promote the care of the environment, always starting from their closest environment.
The initiative is aimed at infant and primary school students of the Island's unitary schools, thus responding to the impulse that the Education Area of the Island Council is giving to these schools, and will focus on different themes, such as the environment, culture and traditions, with the aim of bringing them closer to students in a fun and participatory way.
The Councilor for Education, Ascensión Toledo, emphasizes that "we are starting with this project in the unitary schools of Lanzarote so that students and new generations know our traditions, being also the most appropriate context for it." "This project," adds the councilor, "integrates local culture into the teaching process, providing students with tools to understand and value their environment."
Thanks to this new action, the boys and girls of the unitary schools will learn more about the environment where they live and will make excursions and field studies. In addition, they will learn the lexicon of the island and participate in small theatrical plays based on legends of Lanzarote, such as the story of Princess Ico, among other activities. They will also enjoy, through other activities, the folklore, the native games of our island, or meetings with prominent figures of Lanzarote through videos.
