The Ministry of Education and Universities of the Government of the Canary Islands has completed the installation of a shaded area inside the recreation area and playground of the CEIP Alcalde Rafael Cedrés, in Tías, with an investment exceeding 42,000 euros.

At the request of the Tías City Council and the Educational Community of the public school of Tías, the Ministry of Education has financed and built a pergola of about 200 square meters to provide this infant and primary school, with more than 40 years of age since its construction, an area that would allow the young students to shelter from rain or intense sun during their recreation time.

The Minister of Education and Universities of the Government of the Canary Islands, Soledad Monzón Cabrera, made a visit to the aforementioned school in Tías on the afternoon of Monday, January 21, accompanied by the Mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández.

During the visit to these new facilities, completed in recent days, the Deputy Mayor of the Tías City Council and the Councilor for Education, Amado Jesús Vizcaíno, and Aroa Pérez, respectively, the director of the CEIP Alcalde Rafael Cedrés, Cristo David García González, the president of the AMPA, Tamar Luis Placeres, and the director of the Insular Education Office on the island of Lanzarote, Mario Pérez, were also present.

The Minister of Education and Universities of the Government of the Canary Islands, Soledad Monzón, stated that the investment of more than 42,000 euros in the pergola of the CEIP Alcalde Rafael Cedrés of Tías "will undoubtedly improve the quality of life of the students, by being able to spend time outdoors regardless of the climate." For that reason, she pointed out that the roofing of patios and courts has gained more and more weight in the planning of educational infrastructures in the Canary Islands, "to the point that the 2019 budget contains for the first time a specific item for these roofs, with almost 1.8 million euros." All, according to her words, contained in the new Educational Infrastructure Plan 2018-2025, "for which more than 54 million euros will be invested in improving the quality of educational centers throughout the island of Lanzarote," she concluded.

For his part, the Mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, thanked the Minister for the Government of the Canary Islands for assuming this demand from the City Council and the school board, where both the teaching staff and the parents of the more than 700 enrolled students had been requesting this shaded area for some time, with a new pergola in the courtyard, to minimize the days of intense sun on an island like Lanzarote, where the climate allows for many sunny days during most of the academic year.

During the visit of the Minister of Education to the school in Tías, the classrooms and facilities of the CEIP were also visited, where in recent times the Tías City Council has carried out maintenance work and the Government of the Canary Islands has built new classrooms. The school in Tías, of the three public infant and primary schools in the municipality, is the largest in terms of the number of enrolled students.
