The mayor of Teguise and the vice president of the Cabildo, Marciano Acuña, met this Tuesday with the Territorial Director of Bankia in the Canary Islands, José Miguel Lorenzo Santana, to try to prevent the entity from withdrawing the office it has in La Graciosa, which is the only bank branch in the eighth island.
During the meeting, the mayor informed Lorenzo Santana of his intention to withdraw "any fund, financial operation or banking product that the Consistory has in Bankia, if the entity decides not to maintain its office in La Graciosa." In addition, Betancort warned that the Cabildo and "other institutions" could adopt this same measure.
According to the statement sent by the Consistory, "the message from both institutions to the financial entity was unanimous", and assures that "the Teguise City Council and the Cabildo will opt for the cancellation of their accounts as a measure of pressure to safeguard the interests of the residents of the municipality, and especially of the island of La Graciosa".
Feasibility study
During the meeting, the Bankia executive responded that he will issue a report to the central office of the banking entity, "to request a feasibility study that responds to the demands of the citizens of Lanzarote and La Graciosa".
However, Oswaldo Betancort assures that he "firmly maintains" his position and warns that "drastic decisions will be made from Teguise." In addition, he announces that he will appeal "to the solidarity of all the Canary Islands institutions to put pressure until achieving what is fairest for everyone".
