Los Geranios School will start the school year again without a school cafeteria

The Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands has assured that the Arrecife City Council is responsible for finishing the infrastructure of the CEIP Los Geranios dining room for its start-up. And despite having the necessary material for its operation and having the budget available, the Los Geranios school dining room, finished in 2007, keeps its doors closed due to lack of electrical connection. The Arrecife City Council's Department of Education, for its part, hopes to have everything ready by the end of the summer.

In response to a question asked by the PP parliamentarian, Fernando Figuereo, about the school dining room of the Los Geranios School in Arrecife, the Ministry of Education assures that it is the responsibility of the Arrecife City Council to finish that infrastructure. A work that after several years in execution, was completed in October 2007 and that, however, has not been put into operation. The problems of the old electrical installation of the School have made it impossible to connect the electricity to the dining room building, as municipal officials have recognized on several occasions, after the school was cut off from electricity due to these deficiencies.

The Arrecife City Council foresees, now, that the improvement works on the electrical installation of the School will be completed in September, so that Industry gives the go-ahead and the building that will house the dining room service can finally be connected. According to these deadlines, it seems clear that the dining room will not be available at the beginning of the next school year. The works will be carried out by the company to which the project was awarded and with which the City Council had an important disagreement that even led it to hire the services of another company, once Unelco cut off the electricity to the School due to serious deficiencies in the installation.

With a budget of around 200 thousand euros and provided exclusively by the City Council, the Department of Education hopes that in the next summer months "all the problems will be resolved and the pertinent improvements will be made", although it still considers the involvement of the Government of the Canary Islands in this project necessary.

The regional executive, for its part, points out in its response to Figuereo the commitment of the capital's City Council to carry out and execute the dining room project in the school at the expense of its budgets. In addition, it maintains that in recent years, the General Directorate of Educational Promotion allocated a budget item to the school dining room account, which currently has a balance of 28,951 euros. It also points out that the center was provided with the necessary material for this service since last year.
