The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved the start of the Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Master Plan for Use and Management of the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park (PRUG). This document represents a decisive step in the planning and management of this emblematic natural space, establishing a framework that combines the conservation of habitats with the sustainable development of its population centers.
The procedure approved by the Governing Council this Monday contemplates the remission of the Draft PRUG and the Initial Strategic Document to the Island Environmental Assessment Body of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, requesting the start of the Strategic Environmental Assessment. This process will include consultation with the affected public administrations and interested parties, with the aim of preparing the Scope document of the Strategic Environmental Study.
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, has underlined "the commitment" of the Government group to sustainable and well-structured territorial planning. "This is a fundamental step to continue advancing in the management of our territory, ensuring that all decisions have the necessary technical rigor and legal backing," said Betancort.
For the Councilor for Territorial Planning and Territorial Policy, Jesús Machín, “this PRUG will provide legal certainty to the management of the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park, ensuring that compatible uses are developed in harmony with the environmental values of this natural space that includes the Riscos de Famara, part of the Jable plains in Lanzarote, La Graciosa, the islets of Alegranza and Montaña Clara, the Roques del Este and del Oeste, as well as the marine area between the islets and the north coast of Lanzarote.”
Machín details that this document also includes the contributions of citizens, obtained in the working groups held in Caleta de Famara and Caleta de Sebo in La Graciosa, “reinforcing the Cabildo's commitment to social participation in decision-making about our territory, its development and the load capacity.”
The upcoming approval of the Strategic Environmental Assessment represents a significant advance in completing the processing of the Master Plan for Use and Management of the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park with the aim of achieving effective and sustainable management of the natural spaces of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
