The Kellys of Lanzarote, a group of room attendants who call themselves that in allusion 'to those who clean rooms', gathered on Wednesday afternoon in front of the Rubimar hotel in Playa Blanca to protest the words of the director of the hotel establishment in the La Sexta program 'Equipo de Investigación'. In the program, broadcast on February 24 and dedicated to the situation of room attendants in different parts of Spain, the director of the hotel stated that in his establishment in recent years, half of the staff who perform these tasks are men, pointing out that "they even do an even better job because they have no problems taking care of children." With the protest, as the spokesperson for Las Kellys, Myriam Barros, explained to La Voz, they wanted to show their rejection of these statements that they consider "sexist" and "defend equality".
For this reason, the concentration was timed to coincide with the commemoration of Women's Day. In fact, Las Kellys had called for participation in it not only to the room attendants but to "all the women on the island." In the protest they read a manifesto of rejection and in defense of equality between men and women.
For her part, the president of the Insular Association of Hotels and Apartments of Lanzarote (Asolan), Susana Pérez, asked for her opinion regarding the statements of the director of the Rubimar hotel, stated to La Voz that she does not share "at all".
"What has been pursued for some time and what is intended is to ensure that the reconciliation of family and work life is a reality, both by women and men," defended Susana Pérez, who regretted this type of "statements or philosophy".
