.The Ministry of Public Works and Transport of the Government of the Canary Islands is going to appeal to the Supreme Court the ruling of the Contentious-Administrative Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands that annuls the project of the duplication works of the LZ-1 road in the Arrecife-Tahíche Ring Road section, in Lanzarote, as announced by the regional department a few minutes after the judicial resolution was made public.
According to the Ministry, "the road that connects Arrecife with Tahíche supports a traffic density so intense that it has been considered necessary to increase its capacity." "Apart from vehicles, the conditions of the current road imply a great danger for pedestrians, as it is a single-lane road with two-way traffic," he says.
"On the other hand?continues the Ministry? access to the adjoining properties and the incorporations to the trunk of the road from them have been carried out, in many cases, irregularly, since there are neither speed change lanes nor intersections with adequate signage. The new road will avoid direct entrances and exits to the road from the adjoining properties and roads through the creation of service roads."
The budget for the works, which are being executed by the UTE composed of Dragados and Orinas, amounts to more than 16 million euros, of which 12 are destined for expropriations. Since 2006, residents and several political parties have opposed this project. An opinion from the César Manrique Foundation also warned that the new road was not going to solve the traffic problems it was intended to solve.
