The expansion works of Puerto del Carmen (Tías) carried out by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of the Government of the Canary Islands are quite advanced, as announced this Wednesday in the regional Parliament by the Minister Juan Ramón Hernández.

The works are approximately 70 percent complete, so if they continue at the current pace, the works could be completed this year. The project consists of reinforcing the current dike and expanding it with two new alignments. The project also includes the construction of an interior promenade on the existing dike and a border promenade on the slab.

The works represent an increase in the water surface from 12,500 to 33,500 square meters, and will allow the use of areas that were previously unusable for access to docks, such as the border promenade and the interior promenade of the dike. The solution adopted will facilitate future expansions. The works have a budget of 11.5 million euros.

The fundamental objective of the project is to expand the sheltered water surface and the land surface to meet the growing demand for moorings in the area, as well as to improve the agitation conditions of the dock due to wave action. The project also aims to delimit the areas of rocky shallows in the mouth; integrate the edge of the bank into the port environment and the urban center, keeping its environmental values intact; and promote the necessary actions for the environmental management of the port.

TWO MILLION IN IMPROVEMENTS

At the end of last year, the Tías City Council presented the Ministry with a series of proposals on the actions that are being carried out, which, in its opinion, would result in a better service for the port area. These modifications would mean an increase in the planned investment of around two million euros.

The City Council's proposals are being technically studied through the general directorate of ports, to assess the possibility of including them through a budget modification. They basically consist of demolishing the current square, making one of smaller dimensions and turning it to gain space to expand the area of the parking esplanade, obtaining 110 spaces. It also proposes the displacement of the current breakwater towards the sea.

According to the Ministry, the Government plans to carry out actions on the island of Lanzarote until 2011 through the Canary Islands Ports Plan with an approximate cost of 53 million euros. The investments will be carried out in the ports of Órzola, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca.
