The Cabildo of Lanzarote announces that it has secured a commitment from the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands for the investment of 348,025 euros in the demanded rehabilitation of social housing in the capital's neighborhood of Titerroy.
The Cabildo points out that in this way the Canarian Government, after numerous meetings with the Titerroy Neighborhood Association and with the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, "will grant the Arrecife City Council a direct subsidy to carry out the works." These are aimed at speeding up the procedure, being a much faster formula than the usual one through an agreement, so that "in a few months" the actions will begin.
María Dolores Corujo thanked the regional Minister of Public Works, Sebastián Franquis, "for trying to provide a solution as quickly as possible to the demands of the residents of Titerroy." In that sense, the president highlighted "the meetings held with the Minister and with the Neighborhood Association of the neighborhood to achieve this commitment and solve the situation of the affected families."
"During this term, we have carried out several actions in favor of housing that had never been done before. We have created a Housing Department for the first time in the history of the Institution. For 26 years, not a single public house has been built on the Island and it is the first time that the Cabildo has ceded land for this purpose, solving a problem of social justice and the neglect to which the regional Executive, the island Institution and, especially, the capital's Consistory have subjected the residents," Corujo stressed.
"This subsidy that the Government of the Canary Islands has given to the seven affected families in Titerroy responds to the neglect of the Arrecife City Council, as these have had to vacate their homes for security reasons, given the Consistory's passivity," the president lamented.
The first Corporation explains that the regional Executive requested almost a year ago "the end of the current agreement for Titerroy to carry out a new rehabilitation", since the works were not going to be able to be undertaken in the remaining time of the same. "Thus, the Government commissioned a study to assess the state of the homes and budget the cost of the repairs. Of the 120 homes in the original neighborhood, it was found that many of them had renovations, extensions and improvements," the Cabildo continues to explain.
The Canarian Housing Institute, in charge of said report, concluded the need to act on the homes that did not have these reforms, in order to make them "habitable." "We have been working side by side with the Ministry for some time to provide a solution to these serious problems in Titerroy and, finally, we managed to fulfill the commitment to the citizens, waiting for the Arrecife City Council to receive this subsidy and carry out the works as soon as possible," the president indicated.
Corujo wanted to settle the debate by exposing the achievements made by the Cabildo of Lanzarote in terms of housing: "Despite everything that has been said by those who are incapable of building a real solution to the problems of the residents of Arrecife and resort to lies and demagoguery on a regular basis to cover up their neglect and inefficiency."
