Last December, the Cabildo of Lanzarote approved in an extraordinary plenary session to send the draft of the Island Plan for Land Use Planning of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Archipelago (PIOLC) to the island's environmental body. This document includes what will be the development of the different services and roads of the island of Lanzarote in the coming years. From La Voz we have made a review with the main novelties included in this plan.

Regarding the creation of socio-health places for community use, the draft of the Island Plan proposes the expansion of the socio-health area of Tahíche, where the occupational center, the day center and the nursing home are already located, as well as the Julio Santiago psychosocial rehabilitation center. In addition, there is the creation of a City of Health in the same town of the municipality of Teguise, where the current government group plans a new hospital.

Also to the south of Tahíche proposes the creation of a new Island Sports City. To this would be added a sports center of El Islote de La Santa Sport in Tinajo.

The plan also contemplates an island community area in Tahíche, to the north of the existing socio-health centers, and to expand the island community area of Arrecife, in the land to the south of the LZ-35 and the Experimental Farm of the Cabildo. At this point, these spaces seek to "not only satisfy current demands, but to make a land reserve" for a "harmonious and efficient development".

The plan reserves part of the land of Arrecife for the creation of a future City of Justice in the western area of the capital. In addition, it proposes a land to the north of Arrecife to develop public promotion housing for rent.

It also plans an intervention in the grove of Haría and the future Congress Palace of Arrecife.

On waste management, the new PIOL contemplates the expansion of the Zonzamas landfill, reserving land for this use.

A racetrack and a caravan park

In the recreational section, as La Voz had advanced, the draft contemplates the creation of a rally track as a "fundamental structuring element" to "provide support to the tourist areas" and to the "residential areas".

The draft of the PIOL contemplates the creation of a service area for caravans and motorhomes in the town of Caleta de Famara. This space would be added to the Papagayo campsite, in the municipality of Yaiza. Its creation aims to "distribute more evenly the influx of campers and users of recreational vehicles", while "the natural characteristics and the tourist attraction" of the area are taken advantage of.

Two new industrial areas

The Island Plan also proposes to create two new industrial areas. The first one, between Arrecife and Costa Teguise. Meanwhile, the second polygon will be located in the municipality of Tinajo. The drafter of the Plan foresees to contribute in this way to "the geographical diversification" of the industrial activity. In addition, they propose to build a new island slaughterhouse in Arrecife.

In the energy infrastructures, it contemplates the expansion of the electrical substation Los Callejones, Playa Blanca, the one of Mácher, as well as the underground and aerial lines between Punta Grande and Mala.

Meanwhile, the sanitation ones contemplate the expansion of several treatment plants in Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca, Montaña Roja and Órzola.
