The Fishing School holds a working table to discuss the future of traditional fishing

The participation of tourists in traditional fishing activities or the rehabilitation of old fishermen's houses are some of the proposals that have been discussed at the working table held, on the occasion of the presentation of the Sagital Project, at the Fishing School of Lanzarote.

SAGITAL, Adaptation Services for the Management of Tourism-Fishing Initiatives in Coastal Areas, is a project that is focused on trying to alleviate the threats that loom over companies and workers in the fishing sector, through the design of actions that serve to correct their weaknesses, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the environment. One of its priorities is to stimulate and support the adaptability of companies in this sector towards tourism.

However, according to Agustín Molina García, Director of the Sagital Project, there is still a long way to go, since the first thing to achieve is to make fishermen aware of changing their vision of the business. "It is also necessary to modify the legislation, because it currently does not allow fishermen to carry personnel outside the activity on their boat," said Molina. The Director of Sagital added that the Administration has already committed to changing this aspect of the legislation so that the project can be launched.

This initiative is the result of an agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and the General Foundation of the Polytechnic University of Madrid and is financed by the European Union and the General Secretariat of Maritime Fisheries.
