The exhibition Luján Pérez and his time, which opened last week at the Casa de Colón in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and in the Church and Municipal Theater of Santa María de Guía, features seven pieces from Lanzarote. With this anthological exhibition, organized by the Luján Pérez Canary Foundation, the Government of the Canary Islands, the Casa de Colón of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the City Council of Santa María de Guía, the Archipelago pays tribute to the most important image maker of the Archipelago, known as the artist of the "Canarian Enlightenment", on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of his birth.
Luján Pérez and his time is the first exhibition of this size dedicated to the artist and brings together 200 pieces, mostly creations by Luján, which has involved an enormous effort to collect works in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and several points of the Peninsula.
Among the images transferred from Lanzarote to Gran Canaria, four are the work of Luján - La Fe (from the sounding board of the pulpit), from the Church of San Ginés de Arrecife, the Cristo de la Buena Muerte, from the Church of Tinajo, Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, from the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación de Haría and San Andrés, from the Church of San Andrés, in San Bartolomé - two correspond to his most outstanding disciple, Fernando Estévez - San José, from the Church of Tinajo and the Virgen del Rosario, from the Church of los Valles de Teguise - and one piece is anonymous, the Marble Tabernacle from the Church of San Bartolomé, in San Bartolomé.
The works exhibited, mainly of religious themes, are structured in several sections, distributed in three venues, the Casa de Colón in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Church and the Municipal Theater of Santa María de Guía, the birthplace of Luján (1756-1815). The exhibition Luján Pérez and his time has been possible thanks to the disinterested contribution of individuals and institutions, including the two dioceses of the Canary Islands, the Royal Palace, the National Library and the National Museum of Sculpture of Valladolid.
Within the activities organized on the occasion of this event, the realization of guided tours of 19 churches in several municipalities of Gran Canaria, which preserve 42 pieces by Luján Pérez, as well as itineraries through its architectural spaces, especially the surroundings of the Cathedral of Santa Ana, is planned. Professors from several Canarian and Peninsular universities have collaborated with their research in the edition of the Catalog of this monographic exhibition.
