The Lanzarote Water Consortium joins the commemoration of World Water Day with a reflection on the water emergency declared in Lanzarote and La Graciosa and on the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the inauguration of the Hermanos Díaz Rijo desalination plant, the first facility in Europe to purify salt water.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, wants to convey a message to all the citizens of Lanzarote and La Graciosa to remember that "if the initiative of some Lanzarote residents in their day put us at the forefront of the production of drinking water and took us out of underdevelopment, today we need more than ever the consensus, support and responsibility of all to achieve again a sustainable water management model. As a representative of the will of the majority of Lanzarote and Graciosa residents, that is my greatest concern."
The Lanzarote Water Consortium publishes this Friday on its website consorcioagualanzarote.com a reflection on the celebration, this Saturday, March 22, of World Water Day, which this year the United Nations wants to focus on the theme "Save the glaciers".
Lanzarote will also be the protagonist island during this year of the XIV International Water Congress, organized by the Spanish Association of Desalination and Reuse (AEDyR), which will take place between June 24 and 26 at the Adán Martín Auditorium in Tenerife with the theme '60 years of innovation in desalination and reuse'.
For the Minister of Water of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Domingo Cejas, "we are in a crucial year to address the weaknesses of a water production system that has been overwhelmed by the population increase and the obsolescence of hydraulic infrastructures. That is why for the Water Consortium it is essential that, in these months of water emergency, we use the tools that this exceptional measure makes available to us and make the planned investments that improve the service a reality."
